How to Choose a Klaviyo Agency

How to Choose a Klaviyo Agency: The Complete Guide

There are over 5,000 agencies in Klaviyo’s partner ecosystem. Most of them will tell you they’re experts. Very few actually are.

Choosing the wrong Klaviyo agency costs more than money. It costs time, momentum, and customer trust. This guide breaks down exactly what to look for, what to avoid, and how to evaluate a Klaviyo agency before you sign anything.

Why Your Choice of Klaviyo Agency Matters

Klaviyo is the most powerful email and SMS marketing platform for ecommerce. But power without strategy is just noise. The platform can drive 30% or more of your total revenue when used properly. When used poorly, it sends generic campaigns to disengaged lists and tanks your deliverability.

A great Klaviyo agency doesn’t just operate the platform. It builds a complete retention marketing system: automated customer journeys, intelligent segmentation, CRM infrastructure, deliverability management, and data-driven optimisation. The gap between a good agency and a bad one shows up directly in your Customer Lifetime Value.

Understanding Klaviyo’s Partner Tiers

Klaviyo certifies its agency partners across several tiers based on expertise, client results, and platform proficiency. Understanding these tiers is the fastest way to shortlist agencies.

Partner
The entry-level tier. Agencies at this level have completed Klaviyo’s basic certification. There are thousands of Partner-tier agencies. This tier alone doesn’t tell you much about capability.

Elite Partner
Agencies in the top tier of Klaviyo’s ecosystem. Elite Partners have demonstrated consistent results across multiple clients, advanced platform knowledge, and strategic depth. There are a limited number of Elite Partners globally.

Master Elite Partner
The highest certification Klaviyo offers. Fewer than 0.2% of all Klaviyo partners hold this status. Master Elite agencies have proven expertise at the highest level across strategy, technical implementation, and measurable client outcomes. If you’re serious about retention marketing, start your search here.

When evaluating an agency, ask which tier they hold and when they achieved it. An agency that’s held Master Elite status for several years has a deeper track record than one that just reached it.

The 7 Things That Separate a Great Klaviyo Agency from an Average One

Not all Klaviyo agencies offer the same depth of service. Here’s what to evaluate:

1. Retention Marketing Focus (Not Just Campaign Sends)
The biggest differentiator. Average agencies send campaigns. Great agencies build retention ecosystems. That means automated customer journeys, win-back flows, post-purchase sequences, loyalty integration, and strategic segmentation designed to increase Customer Lifetime Value over months and years, not just individual campaign revenue.

Ask: “What does your retention marketing strategy look like beyond email campaigns?”

2. CRM Audit Capability
Before any agency starts building, they should assess what you already have. A proper CRM audit examines your data quality, segmentation architecture, automation workflows, deliverability health, and compliance posture. It identifies revenue you’re leaving on the table and gives you a prioritised roadmap.

Ask: “Do you offer a standalone CRM audit, and what does it cover?”

3. Dedicated Team Structure
Avoid agencies that assign one person to your account. The best agencies provide a dedicated team: a strategist who understands your business, a designer who builds on-brand creative, a copywriter who writes for conversion, and a technical specialist who handles platform configuration and integrations.

Ask: “Who will be on my account team, and what are their roles?”

4. Deliverability Expertise
Email deliverability is the silent killer of Klaviyo performance. If your emails land in spam or promotions tabs, nothing else matters. A strong agency understands authentication protocols (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), sender reputation management, list hygiene, and ISP-specific inbox placement.

Ask: “How do you monitor and manage deliverability for your clients?”

5. Data and AI Integration
The best agencies use data science and AI to improve segmentation, predict customer behaviour, and personalise at scale. This goes beyond basic Klaviyo features into predictive analytics, RFM modelling, and AI-driven content personalisation. As CRM becomes more sophisticated, AI integration is a genuine competitive advantage.

Ask: “How do you use AI or predictive data in your CRM strategies?”

6. Global Capability with Local Knowledge
If you sell internationally, your agency needs to understand multiple markets. That means compliance knowledge (GDPR in Europe, CASL in Canada, CAN-SPAM in the US), timezone-aware send strategies, and cultural nuance in messaging. Agencies with teams across multiple regions deliver this naturally. Agencies in a single location often struggle with it.

Ask: “Do you have team members in the regions where our customers are?”

7. Shopify Plus Integration
If you’re on Shopify Plus, your Klaviyo agency should hold Shopify Plus Partner status as well. Tight integration between your ecommerce platform and your email/SMS marketing platform is critical for accurate data flow, advanced segmentation based on purchase behaviour, and seamless automation triggers.

Ask: “Are you a Shopify Plus Partner, and how does that integration affect your work?”

Red Flags to Watch For

These warning signs should make you think twice about an agency:

  • No CRM audit before starting work. An agency that jumps straight into building campaigns without assessing your current setup is guessing, not strategising.
  • Templated automations. If every client gets the same welcome series and abandoned cart flow, you’re paying for a cookie-cutter approach. Your customer journey should be tailored to your brand, product, and customer behaviour.
  • Campaign-only focus. Agencies that only talk about campaign sends and open rates are missing the bigger picture. Retention marketing is about customer journeys, lifecycle stages, and lifetime value.
  • No deliverability monitoring. If they can’t tell you your current inbox placement rate or sender reputation score, they’re not managing a critical part of your email performance.
  • Vague case studies. “We increased revenue by 300%” means nothing without context. How long did it take? What was the baseline? What specific changes drove the result? Demand specifics.
  • Low partner tier with big claims. An agency claiming to be “Klaviyo experts” while holding only basic Partner certification hasn’t been validated by Klaviyo at the level their marketing suggests.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Use this checklist when you’re in the evaluation phase:

  1. What is your Klaviyo partner tier, and how long have you held it?
  2. Do you provide a CRM audit before beginning work?
  3. What does your team structure look like for each client?
  4. Can you share case studies with specific, measurable results?
  5. How do you approach retention marketing beyond email campaigns?
  6. What is your deliverability management process?
  7. Do you offer SMS and multi-channel strategies alongside email?
  8. How do you use AI or predictive analytics in your work?
  9. Do you have experience with brands in our industry or region?
  10. What does onboarding look like, and how long before we see results?

Any agency worth hiring will answer these confidently and specifically. If they deflect or give vague responses, keep looking.

What Services Should a Klaviyo Agency Offer?

A full-service Klaviyo agency should cover these core areas:

  • Email marketing strategy and campaign management including promotional campaigns, seasonal sends, and ongoing engagement
  • SMS marketing integrated with email for cohesive multi-channel customer communication
  • Customer journey mapping and automation covering welcome series, post-purchase, win-back, browse abandonment, and loyalty flows
  • CRM audits assessing data quality, segmentation, automation, deliverability, and compliance
  • Segmentation and personalisation using behavioural data, purchase history, and lifecycle stage
  • Deliverability management including authentication setup, reputation monitoring, and ongoing optimisation
  • Loyalty program design and implementation driving repeat purchases and customer advocacy
  • Review generation automating customer feedback collection and social proof
  • Reporting and analytics with clear attribution to revenue, not just vanity metrics

Some agencies offer a subset of these. The best ones deliver all of them as an integrated system where each piece reinforces the others.
